Enter key
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
“In computer keyboards, the enter key in most cases causes a command line, window form, or dialog box to operate its default function. This is typically to finish an "entry" and begin the desired process…”

I know, I already thought it. I already threw it away and then took it out of the trash...

How high school English class of me to start something with a definition. I thought I would shake it up a bit and abandon Webster for Wikipedia to soften the cliché. I can’t help it, I wanted to turn the microscope light and Bunsun Burner on to the word “Enter”.

On an old keyboard, the “Enter” button is usually punched repeatedly, forming new paragraphs and tying a bow on a group of thoughts. It is a button that a pinky finger will rest on un-assuredly until the heart and mind make a leap. It should not be named “Enter”, it should be named “Commit”. Commit to these groups of thoughts having a common thread, Commit to starting a new line, Commit to moving into a new phase of text.

In a script, Enter is usually italicized in the left hand corner announcing an entrance of a character. The word is mere function-pure action. Acting teachers hate that playwrights add adjectives to the actions of characters in a script, (enter quickly , enter hesitantly) for it implies some sort of instruction, it takes away from the actor’s ability to be completely present in their action and in turn, completely honest.

And so: straight up Enter, with no adjectives attached, no previous instruction and no hints or clues as to what is to come, prevails as the best action. This presents the ideal situation as one that is best when knowing… nothing of what is to come.

Answering none of the questions, How will this character enter? Will he have a limp, a lisp, or love the color purple? What will he love to do in the still of the night or in the middle of the day? What will be this characters' most prized possession? How will he change lives?

“Enter Cosmo” "Enter Indigo".…
